Client: Barhale Ltd

Background

Two 1.5m diameter outflow tunnels, each being 240m in length, required inspection and clearing of approximately 300 tonnes of silt.

For Barhale to perform the tunnel cleaning, Vanderkamp provided an over-pumping solution to isolate the tunnels and provide a temporary diversion of the treatment works outflows.

Challenges

The over-pumping requirement was to manage flows of up to 1,900 litres per second, taken between two separate outlets (one up to 1,400 LPS and the other up to 500 LPS).

The pipework needed to cover a distance in excess of 300 metres between outlet and discharge.

The site had access constraints and there were two highways to pump over.

Discharge was directly into a reservoir and the discharge velocity had to be reduced in order not to disrupt the wildlife habitat.

Coppermills Treatment Works services 3,000,000 customers so it was critical that the over-pumping solution was robust to ensure uninterrupted operation and continuity of service to customers.

Vanderkamp Solution

To install and manage 2 x Flygt C3800 dri-prime pumps and 2 x Flygt C3400 submersible pumps. The two-pump set-up at each outlet had one active and one back-up pump.

To Install over 300 metres of 800mm steel pipework including 2 x 5m high pipe bridges spanning the two highways. Due to required road closures, the pipe bridges would have to be installed at night.

Power would be supplied using 5 x 160 KVA generators using HVO fuel.

Utilisation of Vanderkamp’s proprietary smart PLC to ensure:

• efficient power management, so pumps only run at the required rate to manage real-time flow requirements, which results in reduced fuel usage.

• 24/7 remote performance monitoring ensuring the temporary pumping solution is continually maintained through the duration of the project

Outcome

The installation and commissioning of the temporary pumping solution was completed in a two week timeframe and the entire programme complete within 11 weeks.

Vanderkamp maintained a continuous over-pumping solution throughout the duration of the programme, which enabled Barhale to successfully clear the estimated 300 tonnes of silt from the outflow tunnels.
