OCU Group: Enhancing Water and Wastewater treatment system solutions

Providing sustainable water solutions and solving water company challenges through turnkey design, consultancy and construction.

OCU has been providing leading water solutions for over 20 years including delivery of non-infrastructure projects for providers including Wessex Water, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, Affinity Water, Thames Water and South West Water.

OCU Group recently acquired Purestream, another recognised leader in the water industry; providing innovative water and wastewater engineering, design, process solutions and consultancy services. The new team’s expertise includes water and wastewater process, mechanical, electrical, control, instrumentation, civil engineering, pipeline design, resource recovery, water recycling and the application of renewable energy through technologies such as biogas utilisation and hydro-turbine technologies, further strengthening OCU’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Design, Consulting, Process Engineering and Construction

OCU and Purestream leverage their expertise in conceptualising and developing water, wastewater, process solutions and clean energy projects to deliver comprehensive, end-to-end development solutions. They support water companies in achieving their project objectives on time and within budget, while ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and sustainability targets.

Projects delivered include wastewater treatment works upgrades to meet regulatory discharge limits – an example scheme could include design and construction of new inlet works within the constraints of the existing assets, storm storage and return pumping system, filtration units and ancillaries. All whilst providing the temporary modular process equipment to enable a side stream to be introduced enabling the main works to be taken offline to undertake the upgrades.

By delivering projects such as the enhanced optimisation of Activated Sludge Process (ASP) package plant, encouraging biological phosphorus uptake, this allows for only temporary chemical dosing plants to be required under peak loading.

Value engineering is provided to water companies to deliver project objectives through innovative solutions, often incorporating existing assets and infrastructure and therefore minimising cost without compromising functionality or regulatory drivers.

With the Groups enhanced Early Contractor Involvement the team can further assist water companies in moving through their approval stage gates, from concept all the way through to commissioning and handover. This ensures a smooth transition through approval gates, produces a cohesive design aligned to water company asset standards and industry best practice documentation, and reduces the requirement and inefficiencies of risk and knowledge transfer from one party to another.

With Design and Process Solutions capability, delivery of the full spectrum of water and wastewater projects, national resource coverage and more, water companies benefit from an end-to-end project solution. Services include initial optioneering, temporary modular solutions to keep sites within legislation requirements whilst a permanent solution is detail designed, and procurement by tier 1 regional delivery teams.

Environmental enhancements

OCU’s teams are focused on addressing environmental considerations throughout all projects, to ensure compliance with regulations and standards – and wherever possible, identify sustainability enhancements.

Sustainable solutions are actively promoted through designs which minimise energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions, such as identification of opportunities to mitigate interstage pumping through hydraulic assessment and evaluation. Another solution is delivery of overarching improvements for effluent discharge, which lessen environmental impacts to the surrounding watercourse.

Project designs focus on reducing chemical usage, offsite sludge exports and minimising plant footprint in order to limit the impact on the surrounding ecosystem and natural resources. OCU is committed to identifying future opportunities for resource recovery, nutrient mining and water recycling as pressures on water sources increase.
